You passed your exam — now let’s get you selling

Congratulations on earning your license. That’s a real accomplishment, and it’s just the beginning. This guide walks you through every step between here and your first client — the paperwork, the carrier appointments, your ACA and Medicare certifications, and the tools you’ll use every day.

At MBR we believe in one simple idea: each one teaches one. You’ll never be left to figure this out alone. Take the steps in order, check each box as you go, and reach out any time you’re unsure.

Before you begin

A few things to know

Read these once — they’ll make every step that follows make more sense.

How MBR works

We’re an independent agency — you’ll compare plans across many carriers, not push one company. Our belief is simple: educate first, sell second.

You’re a 1099 contractor

As an independent agent you set your own schedule and are responsible for your own taxes, E&O coverage and continuing education. You run your business — we give you the platform, training and support.

How you’re paid

Commissions are paid by the carriers on the business you write and deposited to the account on your direct-deposit form. Your onboarding contact confirms the exact schedule and how to read your statements.

Your roadmap

Six steps to Ready-to-Sell

Follow them in order. Your progress on the checklists below is saved on this device, so you can stop and pick up where you left off.

Setup

Complete your paperwork

⏱ 1–2 hours

First, we get your file set up so you can be paid and appointed. Complete and return each item below. Your onboarding contact will send you fillable copies of everything.

Checkpoint: we confirm every item is received before you move to contracting.
Appointments

Carrier contracting

⏱ ~30 minutes

Contracting is how you get “appointed” with each insurance carrier so you’re authorized to write their plans. You’ll submit a short application per carrier; the carrier reviews it and issues you a writing number.

What you’ll learn
  • Why contracting matters — you can only sell a carrier’s plans once you’re appointed with them.
  • How carrier appointments work — you apply, the carrier runs a background/licensing check, then approves you.
  • How long approvals take — often a few business days to a couple of weeks, depending on the carrier.
  • Which carriers MBR uses — your contracting checklist lists exactly which carriers to appoint with for ACA, Medicare and life.
  • What a writing number is — the unique ID a carrier assigns you so your business (and commissions) are tracked to you.
Certification

ACA (Marketplace) certification

⏱ Varies

To help clients on the Health Insurance Marketplace, you must complete the required federal ACA certification each plan year. The goal here is simple: get certified and send us your proof.

How to get certified
  • Where to log in — your onboarding email links to the correct registration/training portal.
  • How to create your account — register with your name, NPN and email exactly as licensed.
  • How to complete the training — work through each module; it can usually be paused and resumed.
  • How to submit proof — download your certificate of completion and send it to MBR.
Certification

Medicare certification

⏱ Varies

If you plan to write Medicare, you’ll complete a few required certifications. Again, the focus is getting certified in the correct order and sending us your certificates — not learning all of Medicare at once.

What to know
  • Which certifications are required — this depends on the carriers you contracted with.
  • The correct order — complete AHIP first (if required), then each carrier’s own certification, since carriers often import your AHIP result.
  • How to upload certificates — download each certificate as a PDF and send it to MBR.
  • Common mistakes to avoid — using a different email/NPN than your contracting, or doing carrier certs before AHIP.
Access

Technology setup

⏱ 30–45 minutes

Now we get you logged in to the tools you’ll use every day. Your onboarding contact will provide the links and credentials for each item below.

Get access to
  • Carrier portals — where you check appointments, book of business and commissions.
  • The quoting platform — where you compare plans and prepare quotes.
  • The CRM — where you manage leads, clients and follow-ups.
  • Agency email — if one is issued to you.
  • The enrollment platform — where you submit ACA and Medicare enrollments.
Go time

Ready to sell

⏱ ~1 hour

The final step. Before you take live clients, you’ll complete a short readiness check with us so your first real enrollment goes smoothly.

Once approved, you’re officially Ready to Sell. Welcome to the team.
